We have partnered with Birmingham’s Hawthorn Primary School to address technology-related challenges for the short term, as well as laying the groundwork for sustained progress and development.
Challenge: Addressing technology integration and empowering staff
Hawthorn Primary School serves a diverse community with 228 children on roll and a hearing-impaired resource base on site. The school strives to foster confident and successful citizens of the future, valuing teamwork, driving standards, building a culture of support for staff and celebrating success.
However, the school’s leadership team recognised the need for significant improvements in their use of technology. The most immediate issue was the ineffective integration of technology. Although, teachers recognised the potential benefits, they struggled to harness technology efficiently. Many staff members felt ill-equipped to teach the computing curriculum and the rapid evolution of technology left them feeling overwhelmed. They also needed guidance around suitable software from the numerous options available. In short, they sought a partner who could guide them towards an effective digital integration and enhance their teaching practices.
Our relationship with Hawthorn began in 2020 when the school proactively reached out for support. Testament to its continued success, our collaboration happily continues to this day.
Solution: Regular strategic support and a commitment to digital excellence
Following initial engagement, Hawthorn committed to a regular schedule of support, allowing teachers to focus on professional development by releasing them from their classes. This enabled staff to improve their computing skills and understanding of the curriculum, starting from their own individual levels. We provided personalised one-to-one sessions for all staff, helping them to progress based on their individual needs and addressing gaps in their confidence and skills.

We conducted workshops, training sessions, coaching and mentoring to enhance staff confidence in using technology effectively. Special attention was given to the school’s computing lead, empowering her to excel in her role and ensuring the efficient procurement of software and devices.

Working together, we have initiated an exciting technology turnaround at Hawthorn Primary School.
Through the implementation of Entrust’s computing scheme of work, lessons have become more focused and engaging. For the first time, the school has shifted from viewing technology as a challenge to embracing it as a strength. The confidence, enthusiasm and enjoyment of staff is palpable, directly impacting students, who now showcase outstanding digital portfolios that demonstrate their computing and online safety work.
Headteacher Sam Abraham shared, “Our journey with Capita Entrust has been transformative. And it’s not just the teachers, our students – from the early years all the way up to Year 6 – are actively and enthusiastically engaging in lessons.”
In May 2024 Hawthorn underwent a successful Ofsted inspection, being one of the few schools to receive a deep dive in computing. Sam Abraham added: “We are so proud of our successful Ofsted outcome. The unwavering dedication and expertise of our consultant played a crucial role. They were knowledgeable, patient and incredibly supportive. Their guidance helped us navigate the challenges and embrace this transformation with open arms.”
