A reflection: Into the wild at Wilderness Academy residential
The Wilderness Academy team is continuously reflecting on the experiences we offer and the impact they have on young people.
Each activity is designed to foster a deeper connection with nature and build essential life skills. By immersing young people in the outdoors, we help them develop resilience, teamwork, and a sense of adventure. The feedback we receive is a testament to the positive influence these experiences have, encouraging us to keep evolving and enhancing our programmes.
Wilderness Academy is more than just a camping experience; it’s a journey into the heart of nature, offering invaluable lessons and unforgettable memories. Whether it’s your first time or a return visit, there’s always something new to discover at Wilderness Academy.
Discovering the Wilderness Academy: A journey into nature
Imagine the thrill of snuggling down into your sleeping bag for the first time or stepping out of your tent and being greeted by the vast expanse of the night sky. At Wilderness Academy, this is just the beginning. The experience of sleeping under canvas, surrounded by the sounds of nature, is both exhilarating and humbling. For many, it’s their first taste of true wilderness.
A world of firsts
Wilderness Academy experiences offer countless opportunities for first-time experiences. From the simple act of unzipping a tent to the more adventurous activities like fire lighting and shelter building, every moment is a chance to learn and grow. Seasonal changes bring new challenges and lessons, making each visit unique. Whether it’s a close encounter with mud and rain or navigating different terrains, every experience is a step towards understanding and appreciating the natural world.
Reflecting on seasonal changes
Each season at Wilderness Academy brings its own set of wonders and challenges. Spring’s birdsong and blooming flowers, summer’s long days, autumn’s vibrant foliage, and winter’s crisp air all offer unique experiences. These seasonal changes not only enhance the beauty of the surroundings but also teach young people about the cycles of nature. Reflecting on these changes helps us appreciate the diversity and resilience of the natural world, and how each season offers new opportunities for learning and growth.
The quiet of the night
One memorable story from a Wilderness Academy camp is of a young person who found it difficult to sleep because it was too quiet! This immersive experience, away from the constant hum of urban and domestic life, allows participants to truly connect with nature. The night-time noises, from the rustling of leaves to the distant call of an owl, create a serene yet exciting atmosphere.
Excitement for schools
Schools find Wilderness Academy experiences an exciting and hassle-free way to introduce students to camping. With all the logistics handled by the Entrust team, students and teachers can focus on the experience itself. The annual statistics are impressive: in 2024 so far, 1711 children from 32 different schools, ranging from Year 2 to Year 9, have attended a Wilderness Academy experience.
Feedback highlights
The feedback from participants is overwhelmingly positive:
