Get Gas Safe – Key messages for teachers

The Gas Safe Charity in partnership with Gas Safe Register developed a free educational programme which helps you deliver vital safety messages to your pupils.

A range of free high-quality resources can help you teach a fun and interactive lesson to pupils age 9 to 11 with key curriculum links to PSHE Health and wellbeing, PSE and PD & MU.

The website offers a comprehensive lesson plan (‘a one stop shop’) including presentations, videos, quizzes and an exciting interactive house activity. The interactive house allows pupils to spot dangers and hazards in the house and is a great way to educate them on general safety within the home. Materials also include electrical safety advice from charity Electrical Safety First, and the campaign is also supported by RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

The lesson will help your pupils identify hazards around the home, manage risk responsibly and learn all about gas, the hazard that can’t be seen. The detailed lesson plan has been fully tested by teachers, for teachers.

Gas Safety Tips

The top four tips being taught to children through the education programme are:

• Spot the signs of a dangerous gas appliance – floppy yellow flames on cookers, black sooting around a gas appliance or excess condensation in the home
• Look out for the six symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – feeling sick, headaches, dizziness, short of breath, collapse and loss of consciousness
• Make sure all of your gas appliances are checked to be working safely at least once a year
• Only ever use a Gas Safe registered engineer.
